What Is a Server?

If you are into creating a website what you need first is a web host. And if you are looking for a host what you first need to know is Server. If you are in this field for a long time then you probably know what a Server basically is. But if you are completely new and thinking to set up a website then mate its the perfect time to gather some knowledge on Server.

So what a Server basically is?

According to Wikipedia, a server is a computer program or a device that provides functionality for other programs or devices, called ” clients”. This architecture is called the client-server model , and a single overall computation is distributed across multiple processes or devices. Servers can provide various functionalities, often called “services”, such as sharing data or resources among multiple clients, or performing computation for a client. A single server can serve multiple clients, and a single client can use multiple servers.

Let’s explain the thing above. You use a computer to store some data or to execute some programs right? And the speed of accessing those data or executing programs depend on your PC configuration. But in your computer which you store or execute is completely personal. No one other than you can access your computer. But what in the case of websites? Here you have some bunch files (HTML pages) and a bunch of programs (PHP, JS) and you want these to be accessed by the public. So for this, you need a device to be connected to a network. Now that device has some specific ID or location.

Users access the ID or location get into that device and access your files stored on that device. So this device is basically called SERVER. Now same as your PC, the processing speed of Server depends on the configuration of your Server and yes also on the speed of the network or simply Internet.

Now suppose if you use a PC used by multiple users simultaneously then the processing speed will lower. Also in Server, if you use a Server with low configuration and the owner of Server distributing it to multiple users (clients) then in simple logic the speed of your website will be slower.

Many clients with higher demand use multiple servers for a single website domain. It increases the speed, stability, reliability and potentiality of your website to a great extend. If one Server is down for some reason then the other one makes it up. But in fact, a website does not need a hi-fi configuration (resources). Still, a decent resource is recommended. Because if you are a user with decent internet speed then probably you would not like to wait for ages for opening a single web page. So yes Server plays a crucial role in website development. So you need to choose your server wisely as per your need.
