What You Need to Know About Domain Names

Domain Names are nothing but an address of a computer you wish to connect. In computer science terminology, that address is given by IP or Internet Protocol address. They are represented as standard numbers so that machines understand them.
Domain Names make addresses more human-friendly. Say “mywebsite.com” is more human-friendly than 1.1.1.1 or 192.168.1.1

The Domain Name System or DNS takes domain names – human-friendly names and translates them into IP addresses that computers communicate with. So instead of 1.1.1.1, you can remember for example,“mysite.com” or “google.com”.

Domain names are entered into an address bar of web browsers. So if a client is requesting access to a website or a domain name, he enters that name into the browser. The browser communicates with a server or the computer containing the website files and accesses it. The browser simply acts as a medium for accessing the server and displaying the contents of the files or the ‘website’, by entering the domain name into it.

Every machine has a unique identification. On a network, computers use the unique identifier to send data to specific computers. Most networks today, including all computers on the Internet use the TCP/IP protocol as the standard for how to communicate on the network. In the TCP/IP protocol, the unique identifier for a computer is called its IP address. Two types of IP address currently in use that covers all machines of the world

An IPv4 address is expressed by four numbers with dots separating them. Each number is the decimal (base-10) representation for an eight-digit binary (base-2) number, also called an octet.
For example: 216.27.61.137

An IPv6 address is expressed by eight groups of (base-16) hexadecimal numbers separated by colons, as in 1001:cdba:0000:0000:0001:0000:3257:9652. Groups of numbers that contain all zeros are often omitted to save space, leaving a colon separator to mark the gap (as in 1001:cdba::3257:9651).
